Remember your ABC's of safe babywearing!
A is for Airway: You want to make sure your baby can breath. Ensure the baby has an open airway by keeping the chin off the chest. You should be able to fit two fingers between the chin and chest of the child. The child should also be close enough to kiss and in view at all times.
B is for Body Positioning: You want to make sure the carrier you are using is supporting the child appropriately. The child's knees should be higher than his/her bum. You want to mimic the baby's natural position in your arms.
C is for Comfort: The carrier should be comfortable for both the baby and the care giver. If you are trying something new or are not comfortable with a carrier, have a spotter nearby to help you.
CHECKING THE CARRIER
Make sure your carrier is properly designed and if you are buying second hand, be aware there are fakes and reproductions out there. Also, be sure you check the size/weight limit when purchasing a carrier.
Check your carrier regularly, looking for any tears in the seams, broken buckles or fasteners that may need to be replaced.
